Is Alanya a resort town without any disadvantages?
They say that lovers do not notice each other's shortcomings. That’s how it is with a city – you come, you leave your heart there, and it seems that everything is perfect, that there are no shortcomings. You buy an apartment in Turkey, move, and then the rose-colored glasses just come off. But in fact there were disadvantages... Therefore, it is better to study all the positive and negative aspects of the city where you are planning to move in advance. Let's talk about the disadvantages of Alanya in this article.
Alanya is a small resort town
Alanya is a small city. This is not a regional center, or even a million-plus population. The official population here is only about three hundred thousand. Of course, during the tourist season the city becomes much more crowded. But vacationers leave in the fall...
As a result, everyone knows each other, even if only in absentia. This is especially true for foreigners who lead an active lifestyle: working, visiting gyms, restaurants, and in general, not getting bored at home.
Living in a small town, you shouldn’t be surprised if you hear some gossip about yourself from some distant acquaintances. And this often happens in Alanya. But, as they say, there is no smoke without fire; if they talk about someone, then there is a reason for it.
Heat and cold
Yes, yes, you read correctly. In Alanya it can be too hot, but sometimes it can be noticeably cool and even cold.
The heat and stuffiness, which is sometimes difficult to bear, usually lasts no more than a couple of months. But temperatures sometimes break all records: 38-40 degrees in the shade. Plus quite high humidity.
At such times, only air conditioners can save you. Fortunately, in Alanya they are everywhere: in homes, offices, shopping centers, supermarkets, buses, minibuses and even at some stops.
Plus - the sea is within walking distance and the presence of swimming pools in residential complexes. So, if you don’t walk outside for hours during the day, the heat can be tolerated quite easily.
As for the cold, it comes in winter. Despite the fact that even in January and February the temperature here rarely drops below +15 degrees, the apartments are quite cool. After all, in Turkey there is no central heating or hot water supply. In addition, the walls in resort houses are thin enough so that they do not retain heat from the sun in the summer, and apartments in Turkey “cool down” faster.
Therefore, air conditioners, electric heaters, and heated floors come to the rescue. If you turn on your appliances at full power, you can end up with quite large electricity bills at the end of the month.
But at the same time, such a “cold period” lasts no more than a couple of months. In general, winters in Alanya are quite comfortable.
Poor air connections
Despite the fact that just half an hour’s drive from Alanya, an international airport was opened in Gazipasa several years ago, it is impossible to fly wherever your heart desires by direct flight from here.
Yes, planes fly from Gazipaşa to Russia and some European countries, but in most cases, if you want to travel, you will have to fly through Istanbul. Fortunately, several planes a day fly to the city of contrasts from Alanya, and the prices are quite reasonable. And, of course, bus service is very well developed in Turkey - from Alanya you can go to almost any city in the Southern Republic.
Expensive gasoline and car maintenance
A car in Turkey is not a cheap pleasure, and not only in Alanya. Cars in the Southern Republic are much more expensive than we are used to. Of course, foreigners have the right to import a car from their homeland and use it for two years. But you will have to spend money on gasoline. A liter of 95 now costs about 7 liras. This is about one euro. Diesel is 6.5 liras, and gas is about three.
Car repairs are also expensive here. And, of course, don’t forget about the taxes that you have to pay every year. The larger the engine size, the higher the amount that has to be contributed to the state treasury.
The danger of gaining extra pounds
There are many restaurants and cafes in Alanya, where you can always have a tasty and satisfying lunch, and at very competitive prices. The sweets here are especially delicious, and everything is made from natural products.
In general, everything is so delicious that sometimes it’s impossible to resist.
In general, the disadvantages of living in Alanya can be counted on one hand. But these disadvantages are lost among the many advantages. And is it worth fixating on them, living on the shores of a warm sea, enjoying the sun and fresh fruits and vegetables?
